Skillet Sloppy Joes
Saucy, sweet-and-savory seasoned beef piled high on soft buns : the messy comfort classic everyone loves.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup yellow onion
- 0,5 cup green bell pepper
- 2 tbsp garlic cloves
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 0,75 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 4 tbsp hamburger buns
Instructions
- 1
Brown ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high, breaking it up, until no pink remains, about 6 minutes.
- 2
Add diced onion and bell pepper; cook until softened, 4 minutes.
- 3
Stir in garlic and tomato paste, cooking 1 minute until fragrant.
- 4
Pour in ketchup, Worcestershire, brown sugar and mustard; simmer 8 minutes until thick and glossy.
- 5
Season to taste and toast the buns.
- 6
Spoon the saucy beef onto the bottom buns, cap and serve hot.
Chef's tip
Drain most of the beef fat before adding vegetables, but leave a tablespoon : it carries flavor and keeps the sauce from turning greasy.
Suggested pairing
A crisp apple cider balances the tangy-sweet tomato sauce.
