Shepherd's Pie Style Casserole
Savory beef and vegetables under a cloud of buttery mashed potatoes, baked to a golden peaked crust.
Ingredients
- 1,5 lb ground beef
- 2 lb russet potatoes, peeled
- 4 tbsp butter
- 0,5 cups whole milk
- 1 cups yellow onion, diced
- 1 cups carrots, diced
- 1 cups frozen peas
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cups beef broth
Instructions
- 1
Preheat the oven to 400°F and grease a 9x13 dish.
- 2
Boil potatoes until tender, then mash with butter and milk until fluffy.
- 3
Brown the ground beef with onion, then stir in carrots, peas, tomato paste, and Worcestershire.
- 4
Sprinkle flour over the meat and cook 2 minutes, then add broth and simmer until thickened.
- 5
Spread the beef mixture in the dish and top with mashed potatoes, forming peaks with a fork.
- 6
Bake 30 minutes until the potato peaks are golden and the filling bubbles at the edges.
Chef's tip
Brush the potato topping with a little melted butter before baking — it deepens the browning and adds a glossy finish.
Suggested pairing
A dark, malty English ale or a Cabernet Sauvignon suits this hearty bake.
